Skin Care Habits to AVOID

Ever feel like your skin is in a rut or none of your products are giving you the results you want?

It is time to take a closer look at your skincare routine.

Read below to find out what habits could be getting in the way of having an impactful skincare routine:

Too Many Active Ingredients:
Retinol. Vitamin C. Glycolic acid. Lactic acid. Salicylic acid. Exfoliating pads. Peels. Those are just a few! There are so many effective ingredients available; and many of them can do wonderful things for your skin. But more active ingredients don't necessarily mean better results.

Layering too many exfoliating or resurfacing products can irritate the skin barrier, leading to dryness, redness, sensitivity, breakouts, or a rougher-looking complexion. Narrowing down the exfoliants you use based on your skin type and skin goals, as well as using them in the right combination and frequency is essential.

Skipping SPF:
We sound like a broken record, but yes, apply your sunscreen every day! Even in the winter and even if you’re inside for most of the day. Sunscreen not only protects your skin against harmful UV exposure, it also acts as preventative skincare. Premature aging, uneven pigment, collagen breakdown, and changes in skin texture are all results of continued, unprotected sun exposure.

If you don’t already have a favorite SPF at home, consider our best-selling, Tinted SPF 50 or our brush on powder SPF that can be applied over makeup.

Over-Exfoliating:
Exfoliation is a necessary step to achieve healthy, glowing skin by removing dead skin cells. There is a difference between helping your skin renew itself and stripping it down. Signs you may be over-exfoliating include:

  • Persistent dryness or tightness
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Flaking
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Rough or irritated appearance

A good skincare routine includes exfoliating and recovery; this can be as simple as alternating the evenings you use retinol and focus on hydration on alternate nights.

Changing Products too Often:

Changing your routine every few weeks makes it difficult to determine what’s actually working in your routine. It can leave your skin in shock with too many ingredient changes, and just like it’s hard to tell what is working, it’s hard to tell what could be causing an irritation if that happens.

Many skincare ingredients require consistent use over time before you see meaningful improvement. Constantly introducing new products can also increase the risk of irritation, particularly when multiple active ingredients are involved. Focusing on what your skin needs at the moment with a simpler, consistent routine often outperforms a complicated routine that changes constantly.

Not Staying Consistent:

Not only should your skincare routine work for your skin type, but it should also work with your schedule so you can stick to it every day and night. Most products take time to see results, that is why consistent application goes the furthest with changing your skin.

If your mornings are rushed, then keeping your product list short; a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF is the way to go. You may find your skincare routine calming at night when you have more time. This is where more of your “working” products will be used. An evening routine could look like; cleanser, growth factor serum, lactic acid serum, eye cream, and night cream

Expecting Your Skincare to do it All:

Skincare is the foundation to healthy skin, but topical products have limitations with what they can treat or how deeply they can be effective. Loss of collagen, skin laxity, deeper texture concerns, volume loss, expressions that cause wrinkles to settle – can all be addressed with treatments in addition to your home skincare routine. Together, your results will be much more impactful!

Our team can help you determine what your skin needs now—and how to build a routine and treatment plan with a thoughtful approach that makes sense for your individual goals.
